Piping Plover habitat protection order
A federal order under the Species at Risk Act protects identified critical habitat for the endangered Piping Plover melodus subspecies on about 44 federally managed sites in Atlantic Canada. It prohibits destruction of that habitat on federal lands and may require SARA permits for activities that could harm the habitat; Indian Act reserve lands are excluded. The order supports the species’ recovery and aligns with biodiversity and coastal-protection goals, with estimated enforcement and permit costs of up to $373,000 over 10 years.
