Gas Money Saved Act

Full Title:
Gas Money Saved Act

Summary#

This bill tells the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to start a process to reevaluate corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards if Bureau of Labor Statistics data show national average gasoline prices have risen at least five times faster than overall inflation over an applicable period. The applicable period is any period of 180 days or longer that begins after enactment or, if the standards were last adjusted under this subsection, any such period beginning after the most recent adjustment. The bill also amends 49 U.S.C. 32912 to change two dollar amounts: it replaces "$0.00" with "$25" in subsection (b) and replaces "$0.00" with "$50" in subsection (c)(1)(B).

What it means for you#

  • The bill would require a formal review of CAFE standards when gasoline prices rise much faster than inflation.
  • The text does not itself change vehicle fuel economy requirements; it starts a reevaluation process.
  • The bill changes two statutory dollar amounts used in 49 U.S.C. 32912 to $25 and $50, which could affect parties subject to those provisions.
  • Exact, direct effects on consumers, manufacturers, or fuel prices are not specified in the text.

Expenses#

No publicly available information on federal cost estimates, savings, or budgetary effects is included in the bill text. The bill does increase two statutory dollar amounts to $25 and $50, but it does not provide estimates of revenue or enforcement costs.
