Summary#
This bill creates a grant program to help "Drug-Free Communities" coalitions work with local elementary, middle, and high schools to prevent substance use and misuse by youth. Eligible coalitions must have received a Drug-Free Communities grant and have a memorandum of understanding with at least one local school. Grants pay for school-community partnerships to carry out drug prevention plans and, if needed, specialized training. One coalition cannot get a grant for the same school as another coalition.
What it means for you#
- If you are part of a Drug-Free Communities funded coalition with an agreement with a local school, you can apply for a grant to run prevention programs with that school.
- Local schools (elementary, middle, or high) can partner with an eligible coalition to get support for tailored prevention activities.
- Grants must add to existing funding for prevention and cannot replace other federal or nonfederal money.
- The Office of National Drug Control Policy may delegate grant work to other federal drug control agencies.
Expenses#
- A grant may not exceed $75,000 per fiscal year.
- The bill authorizes $7,000,000 to be appropriated for each fiscal year from 2026 through 2031 to carry out the program.
- Up to 8 percent of those appropriated funds may be used by the Director for administrative costs.
- Renewal grants may be awarded for each of the three fiscal years after the initial grant year, subject to the program limits.
