Kangaroo Protection Act

Full Title:
Kangaroo Protection Act of 2025

Summary#

This bill names four kangaroo species and defines a "kangaroo" and a "kangaroo product." It makes it illegal to knowingly bring a kangaroo into the United States for commercial purposes, possess one with the intent to sell, or sell a kangaroo. It also makes it illegal to introduce, manufacture for introduction, sell, offer to sell, trade, advertise, transport, or distribute in interstate commerce any kangaroo product.

The bill sets criminal penalties of up to $10,000 in fines, up to 1 year in prison, or both for each knowing violation. Each violation is a separate offense, and the place of the offense is where the kangaroo or product was taken or possessed. The Secretary of Commerce must issue regulations to implement the section after consulting the Attorney General, the Secretary of Agriculture, and other appropriate agency heads. The main definitions and prohibitions and the penalties take effect 180 days after the bill becomes law.

What it means for you#

If you import kangaroos for commercial purposes, sell kangaroos, possess kangaroos with the intent to sell, or make, sell, or move kangaroo products across state lines, those activities would be prohibited under this bill. People and businesses involved in those activities could face fines or imprisonment if they knowingly violate the law. The Secretary of Commerce will write rules that explain how the law will be applied.
