Romance Scam Prevention Act

Summary#

The bill would require online dating services to notify members who exchanged messages with someone whose account was suspended or terminated for suspected fraud. Notices must identify the account, give the latest message time, warn about possible false identities or fraud, offer fraud-prevention advice, and provide customer service contact information. Services generally must send notices within 24 hours, with some delays allowed. The Federal Trade Commission and state officials could enforce the requirements. The bill would set a national standard for these notices and take effect one year after enactment.

What it means for you#

If you use an online dating service and exchanged messages with a member banned for suspected fraud, the service would have to notify you and provide safety information. The bill also says members should not send money or personal financial information to other members.
