Build Canada Stronger Climate Program

Sign on the House of Commons website

Petitioners ask the Prime Minister to create an urgent, funded Build Canada Stronger Climate Program to expand electricity transmission, scale renewables and batteries, decarbonize buildings and industry, electrify transport, and redirect annual fossil-fuel subsidies.

Why we would sign this petition

  • Speeds deployment of transmission and renewables, increasing low‑carbon electricity supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Addresses major emissions sectors—buildings, industry and transport—so could drive sizeable emissions reductions and stimulate clean‑energy jobs and investment.
  • Redirects annual fossil‑fuel subsidies to fund clean energy, aligning public spending with low‑carbon objectives.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Requires large upfront funding and reallocating subsidies may face political, budgetary and implementation hurdles.
  • Rapid nationwide scaling risks grid integration, permitting, supply‑chain and workforce bottlenecks that could delay or raise costs.
  • Redirecting subsidies could reduce funds for other priorities and may be less efficient than alternative tools like targeted regulation or pricing.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the Prime Minister In Canada and globally, sweltering heatwaves, devastating wildfires, melting glaciers, and unprecedented droughts and floods demonstrate that we are well into a climate crisis and flirting with a climate catastrophe; We are experiencing an existential moment in human and planetary history that demands bold, purposeful action; The crisis is caused by burning non-renewable fossil fuels; Renewable energy is, in very many places, the most cost-effective source of new electrical power; and Canada is actively engaged in an unprecedented opportunity to build a stronger, flourishing, and more internationally connected and respected country. We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to create and implement an urgent, high-profile, generously funded Build Canada Stronger Climate Program anchored in: 1. Accelerating the connection of our electricity transmission infrastructure across Canada, and building one that is designed to enable distributed sources of electricity, large and small; 2. Empowering a massive build out of renewable electricity systems (solar, wind, geothermal and batteries) at scale, and quickly; 3. Galvanizing ambitious programs to radically reduce the carbon footprint of the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, for both new and existing buildings and industrial plants; 4. Expanding a comprehensive program to move our transportation sector off oil-based fuels and onto battery power; and 5. Redirecting the annual billions of dollars of current fossil fuel subsidies to help fund the Build Canada Stronger Climate Program.
