Repeal food taxes and restore research
Sign on the House of Commons websitePetitioners ask the Government of Canada to repeal taxes on food—including the industrial carbon tax, food-packaging tax and the fuel standard that adds 17¢/L—and to restore funding to Agri‑Food Canada research centres and satellite farms.
Why we would sign this petition
- Would lower consumer food prices, easing cost-of-living pressures and helping households facing food insecurity.
- Reducing taxes on farm inputs and fuel could cut producers’ costs, potentially lowering retail food prices as petitioners seek.
- Restoring funding to Agri‑Food Canada research centres and satellite farms could support crop research, productivity and locally adapted innovations.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- Repealing carbon and fuel-related policies would weaken Canada’s climate measures, risking higher emissions and conflicting environmental goals.
- Lost tax revenues could reduce funds available for other social programs or require offsets, creating budget trade‑offs not addressed in the petition.
- Tax cuts may not fully pass through to lower retail prices and could unevenly benefit larger producers more than vulnerable consumers; targeted supports might be more effective.
The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.
Official petition
Petition to the Government of Canada Canadians are enduring a cost-of-living crisis and a recession; 1 in 4 Canadians are food insecure; Food Banks Canada’s Poverty Report Card gave Canada a failing grade in addressing food security; and Canada produces the highest quality food in the most ethical and environmentally responsible manner in the world. We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Repeal all domestic taxes on food including the industrial carbon tax, the food packaging tax, and the Liberal fuel standard that adds 17 cents per litre of gas; 2. Remove the industrial carbon tax as it increases the price of farm equipment, fertilizer, and food processing; and 3. Support agriculture research by reversing the funding cuts to the three Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research and development centres and four satellite research farms, including the satellite farms at Scott, Saskatchewan and Indian Head, Saskatchewan.
