Restore East Central Alberta cellular service

Petitioners ask the House of Commons to require Canadian cellular providers to eliminate cellular and emergency-911 service gaps in East Central Alberta (Amisk, Hughenden, Czar, Hardisty) and ensure reliable rural emergency connectivity.

Why we would sign this petition

  • It would restore reliable 911 and cellular access for named communities, reducing risk to residents who currently lack emergency connectivity.
  • It pressures carriers to fulfill commitments and close documented service gaps, improving day-to-day communication and safety.
  • It advances equity by improving rural infrastructure so taxpayers outside urban areas have dependable emergency communications.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Fixing coverage can be expensive and technically difficult in rural terrain; costs and timelines aren't specified in the petition.
  • Mandating carriers may provoke resistance or legal challenges; targeted government funding or incentives could be more practical.
  • The petition lacks details on enforcement, funding or measurable deadlines, making outcomes uncertain for signatories.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to Pierre Poilievre, Member of Parliament for Battle River—Crowfoot There has been a significant reduction in cellular phone and data services experienced in the region for the past several months in addition to the generally limited coverage; Cellular and emergency 911 services in the rural East Central Alberta-specifically around Amisk, Hughenden, Czar and Hardisty- have dangerously declined, leaving residents stranded without reliable access to life-saving emergency help; and Rural Canada is the backbone of our country, and hard-working taxpayers should never be left in the dark to fend for themselves without basic, dependable infrastructure. We, the undersigned, residents of the village of Amisk and other rural communities in Canada, call upon the House of Commons to: 1. Call upon Canadian cellular service providers to follow through on their commitment to their customers and eliminate cellular service gaps in East Central Alberta; and 2. Ensure that rural communities are no longer overlooked and have safe and reliable emergency connectivity.
