Recognize Indigenous justice systems
Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to fully recognize and implement Indigenous justice systems under TRC Call to Action 42, including reforming sentencing, expanding restorative programs and Indigenous courts, and providing sustainable funding.
Why we would sign this petition
- Would advance reconciliation and may reduce Indigenous overrepresentation by recognizing community-led justice aligned with TRC Call to Action 42.
- Reforming sentencing and expanding restorative programs and Indigenous courts could improve outcomes, support culturally appropriate responses, and increase community involvement.
- Sustainable funding would enable stable, long-term programs rather than short-term pilots, improving effectiveness and planning.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- Requires significant federal funding and resources, raising questions about cost, prioritization and fiscal feasibility.
- Implementing consistent Indigenous justice systems across diverse communities and jurisdictions poses legal, operational and coordination challenges.
- Some may prefer strengthening mainstream justice and social services or addressing underlying social determinants instead of creating parallel systems.
