Parliamentary study of baby formula prices

Petitioners ask Parliament to direct a parliamentary committee to study rising baby-formula prices and report recommendations to ensure infant formula remains affordable and available to consumers.

Why we would sign this petition

  • A committee study can identify factors behind rising formula prices and recommend targeted measures to lower costs and improve availability.
  • Keeping infant formula affordable protects infant and maternal health for families who cannot or choose not to breastfeed.
  • A parliamentary review creates public oversight, gathers evidence, and can lead to concrete policy recommendations.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Commissioning a study may delay immediate help and substitutes analysis for direct actions like subsidies or emergency assistance.
  • Price increases may stem from international supply chains and manufacturers, limiting what domestic policy changes can achieve.
  • The petition focuses on a study rather than proposing specific solutions that might be faster or more effective.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

PETITION TO THE PARLIAMENT OF CANADA Whereas, the rising price of baby formula is a concern for new mothers and fathers who are already struggling with the rising cost of groceries; Whereas in particular the price of Similac has doubled in just the last two years, which represents an expense of approximately $400 per month for mothers who are unable to breastfeed; Whereas affordable baby formula ensures the health and well-being of infants and mothers; Therefore be it resolved that the undersigned call on the Parliament of Canada to direct a Parliamentary committee to study the issue of rising baby formula prices and to make recommendations to keep baby formula affordable and available to consumers.
