Protect Indigenous affordable housing
Petitioners ask the Government to renew and adequately fund National Housing Strategy bilateral agreements before they expire, protect Indigenous housing tenants from unaffordable rent increases, and establish a long-term funding framework.
Why we would sign this petition
- Helps keep existing Indigenous and affordable homes affordable, preventing steep rent hikes and reducing risk of tenant displacement.
- Provides housing providers and tenants long-term funding certainty, enabling maintenance and continued social housing operations.
- Supports reconciliation goals and addresses the housing shortage by preserving already-built affordable Indigenous housing.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- Requires increased federal spending and may compete with other budget priorities, making implementation costly or politically difficult.
- Bilateral renewals could lock in inflexible terms that don't reflect local needs or more efficient housing solutions.
- May not guarantee all affected tenants full protection if funding falls short or if administrative delays occur.
The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled to the following: Whereas: Indigenous and affordable housing providers, including M'akola Housing Society in British Columbia, are facing the expiration of long- standing federal operating agreements; The expiration of these agreements threatens the affordability of 528 Indigenous homes across British Columbia, affecting approximately 1,775 people, including families, Elders and persons with disabilities; In Port Alberni, 42 homes housing approximately 147 people are affected, with agreements scheduled to expire in 2028; Without continued federal support, some households could face rents that double or triple, putting residents at risk of housing insecurity and displacement; Provinces and territories have called on the federal government to renew bilateral agreements under the National Housing Strategy and provide long-term funding certainty; and Preserving existing Indigenous, social and affordable housing is essential to addressing Canada's housing crisis and advancing reconciliation. Therefore, we, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Commit to renewing and adequately funding National Housing Strategy bilateral agreements before existing agreements expire; 2. Ensure that Indigenous housing providers and their tenants are protected from unaffordable rent increases resulting from the expiration of federal operating agreements; and 3. Work with Indigenous housing providers, provinces and territories to establish a long-term funding framework that preserves existing affordable Indigenous housing and provides housing security for current and future tenants.
