Stop Canada Post cuts and review mandate

Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to stop planned cuts to Canada Post services and immediately launch a fully transparent public review of Canada Post's mandate allowing meaningful stakeholder input.

Why we would sign this petition

  • It preserves access to postal services for seniors, people with disabilities, and residents of rural, remote and Indigenous communities who would be disproportionately affected by losing door-to-door delivery.
  • A transparent public mandate review would let affected stakeholders provide meaningful input and correct decisions driven by a consultation seen as limited.
  • Stopping cuts could prevent thousands of job losses and closures of rural post offices, maintaining public service and local employment.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Halting all cuts immediately could worsen Canada Post’s financial position if cost-saving measures are needed and no viable alternative plan is provided.
  • An urgent new review may delay operational or modernization changes intended to improve efficiency and long-term service viability.
  • Targeted protections for vulnerable groups or alternative reforms might better balance access and costs than a blanket halt to all cuts.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled Whereas Canada Post and the governing Liberals are taking an axe to long-treasured postal services - eliminating good jobs, eliminating door-to-door delivery, lowering mail delivery standards, and removing the moratorium preventing the closure of rural post offices. Whereas Canada Post has submitted its plan for these cuts to the Government, but it has not been released publicly. Whereas these cuts will hurt seniors and disabled Canadians in particular, who represent over 40% of the population, as well as rural, remote and Indigenous communities, four million households will also lose door-to- door delivery over the next three to five years, and thousands of workers will lose their jobs. Whereas the Government of Canada has instructed Canada Post to cut services based on an Industrial Inquiry Commission report produced with limited input from the public - its main stakeholder - and which rejected service expansion recommendations of those who did participate, and; Whereas Canada Post offers a public service that needs to be protected. Therefore we, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to stop the postal service cuts, and to immediately launch a fully transparent public mandate review of Canada Post that allows all stakeholders to provide meaningful input.
