Repeal catch-and-release bail
Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to present a detailed plan to address rising rural crime and to repeal soft-on-crime catch-and-release bail policies.
Why we would sign this petition
- It directs the federal government to produce a targeted plan for rising rural crime, focusing attention and resources on affected communities.
- A detailed federal plan could coordinate prevention, policing and support for businesses, potentially improving safety and local economic stability.
- Repealing catch-and-release bail rules may keep violent repeat offenders detained longer, potentially reducing repeat crimes and public risk.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- A federal plan may duplicate provincial and municipal responsibilities for policing and justice and face jurisdictional limits in implementation.
- Repealing bail measures risks increased pretrial detention and potential infringements on accused persons’ rights, raising wrongful-detention concerns.
- A broad rollback of "soft-on-crime" policies may be a blunt approach that ignores root causes and more targeted prevention or rehabilitation alternatives.
