Stop Canada Post cuts
Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to stop proposed Canada Post service cuts and immediately launch a fully transparent public review of Canada Post’s mandate that allows all stakeholders meaningful input.
Why we would sign this petition
- It would halt planned service reductions, protecting postal access for seniors, people with disabilities, and residents of rural and remote communities who rely on home delivery.
- It would preserve door-to-door delivery for households and jobs for postal workers threatened by the proposed cuts.
- It would require an open, transparent review that gives all stakeholders meaningful input into Canada Post’s mandate and future services.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- Opponents may argue halting cuts could delay cost-saving reforms and require continued public subsidies or higher operating costs.
- The government and Canada Post point to prior review work (the Industrial Inquiry Commission), so critics may see a new review as duplicative or unnecessarily prolonging uncertainty.
- A full public mandate review could be slow and politicized; targeted negotiations or operational changes might address problems faster.
The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.
Official petition
Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled Whereas Canada Post and the governing Liberals are taking an axe to long-treasured postal services - eliminating good jobs, eliminating door-to-door delivery, lowering mail delivery standards, and removing the moratorium preventing the closure of rural post offices. Whereas Canada Post has submitted its plan for these cuts to the Government, but it has not been released publicly. Whereas these cuts will hurt seniors and disabled Canadians in particular, who represent over 40% of the population, as well as rural, remote and Indigenous communities, four million households will also lose door-to- door delivery over the next three to five years, and thousands of workers will lose their jobs. Whereas the Government of Canada has instructed Canada Post to cut services based on an Industrial Inquiry Commission report produced with limited input from the public - its main stakeholder - and which rejected service expansion recommendations of those who did participate, and; Whereas Canada Post offers a public service that needs to be protected. Therefore we, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to stop the postal service cuts, and to immediately launch a fully transparent public mandate review of Canada Post that allows all stakeholders to provide meaningful input.
