Designate Peacetime Memorial Day

Petitioners ask the Government to designate October 22, beginning in 2026, as 'Peacetime Service and Sacrifice Memorial Day' and to require the national flag be flown at half‑mast annually on that day.

Why we would sign this petition

  • Creates a single, annual national day to honor Canadian Armed Forces members who died on Canadian soil in peacetime, giving formal recognition to their service.
  • Establishes a clear date (Oct 22) and start year (2026), enabling coordinated commemorations and planning by governments, organizations and communities.
  • Requires lowering the national flag annually, providing a visible, consistent symbol of remembrance nationwide.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • May duplicate or overlap existing national or local remembrance observances, reducing clarity about distinct commemorations.
  • Imposes recurring ceremonial obligations that could entail administrative coordination and minor costs for governments and institutions.
  • Is largely symbolic and does not directly address concrete supports for affected families or broader veteran services.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.
