Protect Salmon Enhancement Program

Petitioners ask the Government to reverse $544 million DFO cuts and keep Salmon Enhancement Program funding beyond March 31, 2026. The government responds that DFO is reviewing budgets and will announce any decisions later.

Why we would sign this petition

  • It would secure funding certainty for volunteer streamkeeper groups after March 31, 2026, allowing local conservation projects to continue.
  • It would preserve SEP-supported training and DFO community and technical support that volunteers rely on for habitat protection and stock assessment.
  • It would avoid service reductions likely to erode local stewardship capacity and community-led aquatic habitat work.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Reversing the proposed cuts may conflict with broader fiscal constraints and the government’s stated need to find efficiencies across DFO.
  • The petition seeks to block cuts outright rather than proposing targeted reallocations or priorities that could be more practical.
  • DFO says it is reviewing budgets and consulting partners; waiting for that review could yield less disruptive, evidence-based solutions.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the Government of Canada WHEREAS • Streamkeepers throughout the province of British Columbia are committed volunteers that deserve certainty for funding support from the Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP) beyond the current budget end of March 31 2026. • The Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP) collaborates with the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation in training that ensures that community volunteers are able protect and improve aquatic health, habitat status, land use and stock assessment with their communities. The SEP provides for DFO Community Advisors and DFO technical support personnel and is absolutely critical for the functioning of Streamkeepers groups. THEREFORE We, the undersigned citizens and permanent residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to reconsider the proposed $544 Million cuts to DFO in the recently passed budget and urge the House of Commons to ensure that no cuts are made to the Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP).

Government response

Response by the Minister of Fisheries Signed by Ernie Klassen Fisheries and Oceans Canada appreciates the work of Pacific Streamkeepers organizations, whose efforts, along with many other Pacific salmon enhancement, conservation, and stewardship organizations, make important contributions to the health of Pacific salmon throughout British Columbia. The Government of Canada is implementing measures to be more efficient in delivering services that matter to Canadians, such as protecting and managing Canada’s fisheries. To achieve this objective, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is carefully reviewing its budgets, planned expenditures, and operations in order to minimize implications to priority services and programs. Further details on decisions and associated adjustments will be shared in due course, recognizing that the Department’s work with organizations, Indigenous partners, and other governments will inform the approach to future program delivery.
